Autumn Equinox Reflection: Hope, Despair and The Path Between (short version)
Updated: 2 hours ago

The seasonal shift that arrives in September feels both beautiful and tangible. We stand at the Autumn Equinox, one of only two moments in the year when light and dark are held in perfect balance. It is a threshold season that invites reflection on where we have been, what has ripened, and what we are being called to carry forward.
This month, I have found myself contemplating the relationship between hope and despair. Returning home after several weeks in Canada, I noticed the same movement within myself that I observed in the landscape around me. A sense of contraction and expansion. Awe and sadness. Connection and disconnection.
As the trip unfolded, patterns began to emerge. Not because I was searching for signs, but because my usually noisy mind had become quiet enough to soften, expand and pay attention. Amid moments of extraordinary beauty, I also encountered the reality of wildfire-affected landscapes, climate uncertainty, and the discomfort that arises when we allow ourselves to truly feel the impact of what is happening around us.
One question kept returning:
How do we remain open-hearted in a world that contains both beauty and devastation?
The answer did not arrive as a clear thought, but through a series of experiences that culminated in an unexpected encounter with a labyrinth. Walking its winding path offered a powerful insight into doubt, purpose, trust and direction.
In the full Seasonal Circle journal, I explore:
Synchronicity, patterns and meaningful coincidence
Hope, despair and the path between them
Climate grief, connection and compassionate action
The symbolism of bears, boundaries and respect
A labyrinth walk that transformed my understanding of purpose and trust
Reflections on the Autumn Equinox as a season of balance, harvest and meaning
As we move into the darker half of the year, perhaps the invitation is not to choose between hope or despair, certainty or doubt, but to learn how to walk with both.
